Lake White Dam Leaking

Lake White Dam Leaking

Boaters at Lake White are being told to remove their watercraft from the water after a leak was found in the dam's spillway.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says the leak was discovered during routine maintenance on Friday.

"Out of an abundance of caution ODNR has lowered the lake level by about a foot-and-a-half at this point to better assess the damage and possible cause," said ODNR spokesperson Bethany McCorkle.

The leak is draining about 50 gallons per minute from the lake. McCorkle says the dam appears to be sound and there is no danger of catastrophic collapse or failure.

Boaters were lining up at boat ramps in the lake to remove their boats Saturday.

"There ain't going to be no boats going out of there if we don't get them out," said Randall Altman of Waverly.

David Pierson says he was called by a man who had just bought his boat to alert him about the leak.

"I went out there and helped him get his out and we just barely got it out. Now we're down here waiting on this end to get my sister's boat and jet ski out," he said.

Concerns about heavy rain on Sunday also played a factor in ODNR's decision to lower the lake.

State Route 104 will be closed while crews make repairs to the dam and spillway.
