Quincy's Preston Church kept the Paints off balance and got some help in a 3-1 win over Chillicothe in the Prospect League championship game Wednesday night.
It's the Gems' third PL title.
The Paints didn't score until their final at bat, when Dan Zuchowski had a pinch-hit single to score T.J. Diffenderfer, but it was the only clutch hit Chillicothe could muster.
Church scattered 7 hits over 8 innings, walking just two and striking out four Paints batters. Church had lost to the Paints 1-0 on June 25th.
Quincy struck first blood when lead off batter Dominic Miles singled and scored on an error for the 1-0 lead.
The Gems scored two more times in the 4th inning. when for a second time in as many games, Paints starter Lance Elder was struck on the shin by a line drive. Matt Marek's liner allowed him to reach base. Logan Bone followed with a single to center scoring Cassidy Brown for a 2-0 lead. Bone scored on a single to left by Mitch Gasbarro. The Paints caught a break when Gasbarro attempted to score during a run down for another runner heading to second. Chad Sedio alertly threw to home where Andrew Guthier tagged Gasborro for the second out. Elder got out of the inning by striking out Miles.
The Paints had two hits in the first and second innings, but were un able to get another base runner until Gauthier reached on an infield single and Sedio followed with a single in the 5th. But again were unable to cross the plate.
The Paints finished the season with 43 wins.
